Deputy Attorney General for the State of California

It is official!

I am employed again. On Monday January 29, 2007, I started working as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of California.

The current Attorney General (AG) is Edmund G. Brown Jr., aka Jerry Brown, aka Governor Moonbeam. Whatever your political leanings may be, Jerry Brown will most certainly make for an interesting boss.

I am assigned to the Civil Division and am in the Employment Regulation and Administration Section. For the most part, I will be defending any manner of employment claims brought against the State of California and agencies of the State.

This is obviously a significant change; both in practice area (bankruptcy to employment) as well as type of practice (large law firm (DLA Piper) to the public sector (the great State of California)). I am truly looking forward to the challenge.

The last several months have been a wonderful blessing. I had lots of time to spend with Andrew and Noah, as well as with Robin. We were able to get started on some pet projects. However, we also learned that having us both at home with the kids does not necessarily lead to more things getting done. Instead, it leads to uncovering more things to do.

When I got home from my first day, I greeted the boys and Robin. Andrew, in typical Andrew fashion, told me "I don't love you Daddy." I asked him “why?” and he replied, "Because you are wearing a button shirt." I promptly removed my outer layer and was welcomed with a big hug and a proclamation, "I love you Daddy. When you are wearing a button shirt, I don't love you, but now, I love you." The little guy missed me.

About five minutes later, the doorbell rang. It was Theresa Pollock along with Nathan (4 ½ years) and Lauren (she turns 2 on Saturday). They had come for dinner and had brought over a lovely ice cream cake with "Deputy Attorney General" written in icing on the top! A great cap off to my first day!

In the coming weeks, I should receive a full fledged badge. I'm sure the kids will love that.
